Metal Forging VS Die Casting for Fire Sprinkler Frames

There are two ways to shape the fire sprinkler frames, one is metal forging and the other is die casting. Both are very different processes that are appropriate for different situations. So a question comes up, “Metal Forging VS Die Casting: which is better to shape fire sprinkler frames?”. To properly answer the question, let’s know more about the processes and the advantages of each.

What is Metal Forging?

Metal Forging is a manufacturing process, in which the metal is heated to very high temperature but still in solid state and then forced into an open die until it conforms to the desired shape. Forging results in metallurgical recrystallisation and grain refinement after the thermal cycle and deformation process. Forging parts are denser and mechanically stronger.

What is Die Casting?

Die Casting is a manufacturing process, in which the metal is heated until molten and then forced into a closed die where it cools into the desired shape. The process is often described as the shortest distance between raw material and finished product. Die-casting parts are characterized by a very good surface finish and dimensional consistency.

Metal Forging VS Die Casting

In the case of manufacturing fire sprinkler frames, the following factors shall be taken into consideration.

1. Durability and ductility Metal Forging Win!

If same durability and ductility shall be realized, better material has to be adopted in the die casting process.

2. No porosity, shrinkage, cavities Metal Forging Win!

The nature of forging excludes the occurance of porosity, shrinkage, cavities. As to die casting, these problems have to been well solved at the first place.

3. Surface finish and dimensional precision Die Casting Win!

Follow-up machining process for forging components is more complicate in order to improve the surface and dimension.

4. Process Stability and Production Efficiency Die Casting Win!

Die casting allows components to be created with accuracy and repeatability. The casting cycle time is very short, especially for the small size components.

5. Material Scrap Die Casting Win!

There is less material scrap in the casting process because the trimmed parts can be melted again.

Nowadays in China, the majority of fire sprinkler manufacturers adopt hot forging process. Why? In my opinion, the main cause is still on the cost, not only the product cost but also the production equipment cost. Furthermore, die casting workshops are more difficult to pass the government inspection on environmental protection. It’s also an important point that will be taken into consideration by the manufacturers.

It’s difficult to say which process is better. Just choose a suitable one.

SHUNDANFIRE can provide forging and die casting, both performed in excellent conditions. We always customize according to customers’ specific requirements and find the best possible solution.
